Three years after Margaret Mitchell’s novel was published, Hollywood producer David O. Selznick set out to turn Gone with the Wind into the blockbuster film it would become. But here’s the twist: while filming was underway in Georgia, Selznick grew dissatisfied with both the screenplay and the director. In 1939, he halted production, brought in a new director and screenwriter, and—over the course of just one week—completely rewrote the script.
